What is artificial intelligence, and what are the current and future applications
Believe it or not, but whenever the topic of Artificial Intelligence is discussed among the general masses, it’s perceived more as dreaded technology that will one day take over the world and subjugate us. But beyond the realm of science fiction and human fear, artificial intelligence is changing the world for the better. It’s a hotly discussed topic, yet most of us lack a clear and comprehensive grasp of the phenomenon. Artificial Intelligence-driven world isn’t a far-flung future but a reality we are living in. Therefore it’s critical that we fully understand the concept.
With this post, we will discuss in detail what artificial intelligence is and how it’s reshaping the world? So, read along to understand the phenomenon and have a full grasp of the concept.
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence is a phenomenon that encompasses vast numbers of disciplines, from computer science to mathematics, neurology to brain study, etc. Therefore, it’s challenging to give it an all-encompassing definition. However, technicalities apart, a rather banal definition that could present the concept in a simple manner is like this: Artificial Intelligence is a discipline with the primary objective of studying, designing and developing systems capable of performing tasks typical to humans. In other words, systems capable of mimicking human behaviour, reasoning and skills.
How Artificial Intelligence Works?
Same as the definition, detailing the working of AI is instead a vast and complex topic. However, to facilitate understanding, we have divided the working of an AI into four functional levels.
The first level is Comprehension, which, thanks to the event correlation and simulation of cognitive abilities, allows an AI system to recognise text, images, audio and video to work and extrapolate the information.
The second level is the Reasoning part, which, backed by a complex mathematical algorithm, allows the system to make connections across multiple data sets and infer reasonable meaning in an automated way.
Next comes, Learning, where the system compares new data received with past information in order to perform a given task. Take, for example, a machine learning system, which could perform various tasks through automated learning.
And lastly comes the interaction part. It’s the level where a system truly becomes AI and performs tasks based on its interaction with humans.
Artificial Intelligence: Applications and The Future
In the famous world of Dr Kai-Fu Lee, “Artificial Intelligence is going to change the world more than anything in the history of mankind. More than electricity.” Healthcare, Marketing, Cybersecurity, Public safety and numerous other sectors are now focussing more and more on AI to make the system more precise, effective and efficient. It’s no surprise that AI is the future of almost every industry and sector. Even the most promising and emerging technologies of our time like Big Data, Robotics and IoT are driven mainly by AI. Therefore it’s safe to say that the future will witness AI at all levels of social and technological evolution.
